Episode 4 – THE SOUND OF SILENCE
Three weeks.
Twenty-one days had passed since we had commissioned the first mechanical seal on the tailings pump.
Not a single phone call.
Not a single email.
Not even a text message.
For most people, silence means very little.
For someone who spends his life commissioning critical equipment hundreds of kilometers from home, silence can mean everything.
Or nothing.
As I sat behind my desk one Tuesday morning, paperwork lay scattered around me, but my thoughts kept drifting back to that chrome mine. I had learned long ago that the days immediately following a new installation are often the most nerve-racking. If something is going to fail because of an overlooked dimension, an installation error, or an unexpected operating condition, it usually doesn't wait long to announce itself.
Yet three weeks had passed.
Nothing.
I leaned back in my chair.
"Maybe that's a good sign," I thought.
Then my old raveling companion arrived.
Not Oliver.
Not Mr. Ghomo.
The other Me.
The quiet voice that every engineer, every salesman, every entrepreneur knows only too well.
"But what if..."
What if the seal had failed?
What if they were disappointed?
What if they had simply removed it and reinstalled gland packing without telling me?
What if they had already decided never to use our technology again?
Experience teaches you many things.
Unfortunately, it never completely silences self-doubt.
I looked at my phone.
For a few moments I argued with myself.
"Leave it alone."
"If something were wrong, they would have called."
"Yes..."
"But what if they didn't?"
I smiled.
The other Me had won.
I picked up the phone and dialed Oliver's number.
It rang twice.
"Hello?"
It was Oliver.
His voice sounded relaxed.
Almost cheerful.
"Morning, Oliver. Franscois speaking."
"Franscois," he replied warmly.
"I haven't heard from you, so I thought I'd phone and see how things are going."
I deliberately tried to sound casual.
As though I were simply checking in.
Not secretly searching for reassurance.
Oliver chuckled softly.
"I'm doing just fine."
There was a brief laugh before he continued.
"And so is your seal."
For the first time that morning, I felt my shoulders relax.
"No leaks?"
"Not one."
He laughed again.
"You know... a man could actually get thirsty inspecting the tailings plant these days."
I burst out laughing.
Only someone who had spent years walking through those pumps would understand the joke.
Three weeks earlier, anyone inspecting that section of the plant would have left with boots soaked in slurry, clothes sprayed with gland water, and probably a few colourful opinions about conventional packing.
Now...
The floor was dry.
The pump was clean.
The daily ritual of tightening glands had simply disappeared.
It was such a small comment.
Yet it carried enormous meaning.
Engineers measure pressure.
Flow.
Temperature.
Power consumption.
Operators measure something entirely different.
They notice what has stopped irritating them.
That was the first real confirmation that the project was becoming part of everyday life.
"I hear you, Oliver," I replied.
"Would you be able to arrange another site visit for me this week?"
There was a short pause.
"I'll see what I can do."
"You'll hear from me this afternoon."
"Perfect."
We said goodbye.
As I placed the phone back on my desk, I couldn't help smiling.
The silence that had worried me all morning suddenly made perfect sense.
Reliable equipment rarely generates conversation.
Nobody calls to report that everything is working exactly as expected.
They simply get on with their jobs.
Perhaps that is reliability in its purest form.
Equipment that quietly disappears into the background.
Later that afternoon, Oliver called back.
"You're booked for Thursday."
"I've spoken to Mr. Ghomo."
"They're looking forward to seeing you."
Perfect.
The visit would be different this time.
I wasn't returning to solve a problem.
I was returning to measure success.
Over the next two days, I immersed myself in the numbers.
Engineering has taught me never to rely on emotion when facts are available.
Customers may remember how a presentation made them feel.
But they invest because of measurable results.
I opened my laptop and began compiling a performance review.
Every calculation had to tell a story.
Not a sales story.
An engineering story.
I calculated the gland water that had been eliminated over twenty-one days of continuous operation.
Thousands upon thousands of liters of treated water had remained inside the process instead of pouring harmlessly onto the floor.
I compared maintenance records.
No daily gland adjustments.
No packing replacements.
No sleeve wear.
No emergency callouts.
No bearing contamination caused by leaking slurry.
Each statistic represented something larger than a number.
Every maintenance task that disappeared meant an artisan was free to repair equipment that genuinely needed attention.
Every liter of water saved reduced pumping costs and improved process stability.
Every hour of uninterrupted operation increased production availability.
The numbers were beginning to tell a remarkable story.
But perhaps the most satisfying statistic couldn't be measured on a spreadsheet.
Zero.
Zero leaks.
Sometimes the smallest number creates the greatest impact.
As I assembled graphs, photographs, maintenance logs and operating data into a concise engineering report, I realised this meeting was no longer about defending a new technology.
The technology had already defended itself.
Now it was time to show the mine exactly what three weeks of reliability looked like.
As I closed the presentation folder, I found myself looking forward to another sunrise behind the steering wheel.
Another long stretch of African highway.
Another conversation.
Because every successful installation creates something even more valuable than a satisfied customer.
It creates evidence.
And in engineering...
Evidence is what transforms belief into confidence.
